It sounds like an issue with the available RAM. It doesn't hurt to try and allocate more RAM to your game, here's a guide.
8gb should be more than enough to run vanilla Minecraft.

You have to tell more about your laptop. How much memory it has.
If you mean Google Chrome, it's better to close chrome before playing minecraft.
It will take less resource to play.

If the computer is crashing, that is 100% a problem with the computer.
Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.

Sometimes you have to manually allocate more RAM to Minecraft, 4gb is more than enough for vanilla Minecraft.
Since it's well know that Chrome can be a massive strain on RAM, allocating more will help.
Also, OP, if you're only having this issue only when Chrome is open, why not just... you know, close Chrome, lol. Problem solved.
