Ok, first of all, if you're going to ask me why am I trying to start 1.4.7 when 1.12.2 is out. I'm wanting to load MonkeyFarm's 2nd LP world in a version where almost nothing will be corrupt.
I get a crash before loading up the menu for a reason that doesn't display.

Is Modded: Very likely; Jar signature invalidated
Type: Client (map_client.txt)
Texture Pack: Default
Profiler Position: N/A (disabled)
And I wasn't using mods, I wasn't using the old launcher.
but Minecraft beta and alpha versions work just fine
That doesn't matter:
Downgrading is not, was never, and will never be officially supported. You are advised to run older versions in separate directories. Otherwise, issues like this will occur.
When launching Minecraft 1.5.2 or below in a folder that was previously used to start a recent version (e.g. 1.12), the game will crash on start:
java.lang.NullPointerException

at bp.a(SourceFile:64)
at bp.a(SourceFile:100)

at avv.a(SourceFile:56)
at net.minecraft.client.Minecraft.run(SourceFile:507)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
Also, due to MCL-1394 you should instead run newer versions in a separate directory as older versions (also 1.5.2 and earlier) do not properly support non-default directories. You'll need to delete options.txt first though (and even if the game does not crash each time you switch versions you'll have to reset a lot of settings).
In addition, the current launcher does not properly download sounds for older versions; you'll need to use the older launcher so they are downloaded properly, after which you should be able to use the current launcher and they will still work, and if you want a custom skin you'll have to use a resource (or texture) pack to change the default skin (any custom heads will not work either way).
(due to all of these issues you are probably better off using a 3rd party launcher if you frequently use older versions; Mojang takes too long to fix even minor bugs, especially since they do not officially support anything older than 1.12.2 other than to let you still play them - most game/software developers don't even let you get older versions).

As I mentioned, you need to use the default directory - and delete options.txt from it - for 1.4.7 and instead use a different directory for newer versions:

Yes, any version below 1.6 ignores custom directories. Note that Beta 1.7.3 used to work, but doesn't now in Launcher 1.3.8.

Use separate game directories for old versions.

Install Java 7 and point the game to that version
Beta and alpha don't have localization. Should I go even deeper into detail or do you rather actually play the game?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I put 1.4.2 and 1.4.7 in their own directories, yet, they're still crashing

you could also just play the newer version. Why do you wanna play 1.4.x tho?
