As the title suggests I am currently having sound trouble while trying to run previous versions of Minecraft java edition. It runs the current version just fine but I want to give the old Super Hostile maps a go. So when I run the game the video is smooth but there isn't any audio of any sort. How do i fix the issue?

This was a common audio issue with old versions of the game, and even now. Usually you can fix it by adding a resource pack, and then removing it to update the sound.
This is more than just an issue with some older versions - all versions prior to 1.7.3 have no sound because the launcher isn't correctly downloading them:
As mentioned in the link, you can try using the older (Java) launcher to download the files (launch the version once) and they will remain even after switching back to the current launcher (when the launcher updated to it I did not have any issues with 1.6.4 as I already had the files downloaded):
More context for this bug, it looks like the new launcher isn't unpacking the assets into assets/virtual/legacy. I re-downloaded the old launcher, launched the game so that the assets are loaded, then switched back to the new launcher and everything worked. Attempting to launch before from the new launcher created the assets/virtual/legacy folder, but the folder itself was empty.
Alternatively, a 3rd party launcher may be used; I have never tried any but I presume at least some have fixed the bug in the official launcher (or never had it); they also generally make it much easier to run custom versions and mods (I still use the official launcher since it has not given me any issues yet).
Similarly, custom skins no longer work either since they recently shut down the old skin server (versions prior to 1.3 used an even older server which has been down for years) but you can get around this by using a custom skin in a resource pack (texture pack for 1.5.2 and older), although custom heads and other players in multiplayer will all use your skin (in my case I only play singleplayer, no custom maps, so this doesn't matter; I had long ago replaced the default skin with my own to guard against temporary server issues):

TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
