Ok, so I have been playing in the current snapshot 18w11a and I got a nice hardcore world which I was settling into quite nicely, however as I was constructing a pen around a couple turtles to keep them safe, while a zombie drowned behind me, the game crashed. I attempted to reload the world a couple more times, with it crashing both times, and when I went to reload it a THIRD time it was gone.
I have checked the save files, and it seems the thing that is missing is the level.dat file(s). Which if I am not mistaken is the world seed data? Alas I had not recorded the world seed, which is ironic because I had originally Ctrl+C'ed it to recreate it after dying on the very first night in the first attempt, and liked the world too much to simply make a new seed. However I must have overwrote it at some point before it was lost...
Is there anything I can do to retrieve the seed? I really liked it, and would hate to have lost it this way. A restoring my system to a previous point in time is not an option either as I do not have the the computer backing saving so much data for that, so I hope there is another way :\
You could use some data loss retrival tools. if you want it back I reccomend you to stop using minecraft or change the directory. It might be retrievable
After all its a snapshot, you should never play on snapshots

Oh? Well thank you but I uh... heh resolved it for myself. After doing a little digging I noticed people who have their games crash get crash reports, which state the world seed!
Didn't know where that was and... uh.... found a crash reports folder :D......
._.
And nonsense! Snapshots are meant to be played! That's why they are playable, silly! As long as you don't try to play on worlds not made on that snapshot, it's fiiiiiine.... just don't expect to avoid lag, crashes, weird bugs (lol different trees are spawning INSIDE of eachother in this one!) or you know... a perfect minecraft experience.
However, one SHOULD at least be able to expect their world seed not to disappear into thin driver space without being retrievable!
And in this case, thanks to how mojang has their report logs structured, it was indeed retrievable! Huzzah! Things worked the way they are SUPPOSED to work for once!

Snapshots are unstable, anything can happen, they haven't been optimised, and contain loads of bugs.
