I'm using Arch Linux. I have the same problem whether I install from AUR or the official Minecraft website. I click "play" on the launcher, the launcher exits, and nothing happens. My Desktop Environment is KDE Plasma.

Do you have the latest Java installed for your environment?

I have jdk8. I have tried it with jdk9 as well. I am facing the same issue.

Upgraded to JDK9. Here is what the terminal states when I launch:

Where did you get that launcher from?
