My Nvdia control panel shows the bundled java runtime is set to use Nvidia processor. As a test I also changed the Nvidia global setting from auto-select to the Nvidia processor - same result.
Update: I upgraded to latest driver, booted with all startup services disabled, restored to a system restore point from before the problem started - still the same issue after each attempt. After some reboots dxdiag will sometimes show D3D available, but Minecaft would crash and then dxdiag would show it not available. Sometimes after a reboot ASUS GPUTweak would fail. I have a feeling it is a hardware problem with the Nvidia graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M). If I uninstall the NVIDIA graphics card Minecraft will start and run on the integrated graphics card - but it always fails if I re-enable the Nvidia graphics card. What I really need is a utility to do a hardware diagnostic on the Nvidia Graphics card.

Update your drivers
I have the current nvidia driver.
You aren't using your nvidia driver. Google nvidia how to set default graphics.
My Nvdia control panel shows the bundled java runtime is set to use Nvidia processor. As a test I also changed the Nvidia global setting from auto-select to the Nvidia processor - same result.
D3D Status: Not Available
Driver Version: 23.21.13.9077
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/517330/direct3d-disabled/
If that doesn't work, google gtx 870m d3d disabled.
Also latest Driver Version should be 23.21.13.9101, at least for me.
