I didn't think I had to include the port if I was using the default port.
Yes, I'm hosting my own server locally to me, but I'm trying to test it to make sure it works for users outside my network before I give them the host name. They have the IP and it works for them, but I wanted to give them a host name in case the IP changes. I'm using a program on my Raspberry Pi to update the ip dynamically on freedns.afraid.org when it changes.
I have a Minecraft server and I recently used freedns.afraid.org to create a DNS for it.
I can access my server from Minecraft on the local LAN
I can access my server from Minecraft using the external public IP address
My computer can resolve the DNS hostname and get the IP
I can ping the hostname from a command window and it returns the ip
I've done ipconfig /flushdns
I've deleted the server.dat file and re-added the servers
No matter what I do, Minecraft cannot resolve the hostname.
I tried a different public host name and that worked fine.
What could be my issue?
Thanks,
Todd
Did you include the port number?
Are you hosting your own server locally to you? I don't quite understand the "access my server from Minecraft on the local LAN" otherwise.

Also, if I use https://dinnerbone.com/minecraft/tools/status/ to check the status of my server using the host name, it is able to access it, so maybe it's just something on my pc.
Try your computer's firewall.

Turning my firewall off makes no difference.
