Attempting to bind, for example, one command to R and another to ALT-R causes both commands to display in red in the Options->Controls window, even though the two-key combination is recognized. Inspecting the options.txt file shows that :ALT is added to the end of the line. Pressing ALT-R fires both commands.
Surely, this isn't supposed to be? Minecraft recognizes two-key bindings both in the GUI and in options.txt, so it's clearly meant to know that ALT-R is a single command.
But, if ALT-R is already bound, then the entry in the GUI turns red as soon as either R or ALT are bound by themselves to another command, which suggests that one *isn't* supposed to do this. But why would the possibility be recognized if it weren't valid? If ALT-R can't be different than R, why would anyone bother binding two keys simultaneously? I could bind one command to ALT and another to R and get the same effect.
What am I missing? How do I bind one command to R and a different one to ALT-R?
I'm using 1.12.2 and a Mac, in the unlikely event that that helps.

Does the same thing happen when trying to combine keys with the command or control keys?
It seems like the default function of the Alt/Option key on the Mac is taking precedence over what you are trying to set.
Yes, the same thing happens for shift, control, alt/option, and command.
Close the game and launcher windows, then try manually deleting the options.txt file.
After that restart the game and see if it still happens.
