as to exactly how well it will run minecraft thats not a simple answer as it can vary on more than just the hardware, but what software you have running in the background.
If you are yet to buy the game you can run the demo to see how well it runs, or if you have got the game just try it and see
Thanks for the really quick reply. I had found the requirments from Mojang but the part of me that is not "semi computer lieterate" means I really don't know how to match these things up. The CPU and ram seam okay but the graphics card is what I don't get. Mojang states "7000 series with OpenGL 4.4." The card on the new pc states 7470 so that appears to be 7000 series but I don't anything about OpenGL.
It is going to take some time and work to get this new pc going so I am trying to see if it even worth trying before I get his hopes up and spend some time doing this.
Anectdotal help, but I have run MC v1.12.2 on a 3.4GHz i3 using an AMD Radeon HD 7470.
I also found Optifine ( see https://optifine.net/home ) improved performance… additionally I found closing and reopening MC every few days (instead of just using "Save and Quit to Title") helpful in avoiding choppy play.

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.

Thanks again.
I just don't want to get my son's hopes up nor waste any time getting this all set up up if it is too much of a stretch for MC to work smoothly.
