I have 6 GB of RAM on my system. Usually at least 1.7 GB is always used by the system/background processes. Usually when I play Minecraft it is the only program I have running. I currently have 1 GB of RAM allocated to Minecraft but want to increase it because the allocated memory keeps hitting 100% while I am playing on my work-in-progress Skylands map. How much memory should I allocate?
Depends on what you need/want it to be allocated. If its mods, I'd recommend 2GB for small packs, and 4GB for bigger packs. If its for building, vanilla survival, minigames, adventure maps or whatever else exist for Minecraft players these days I'd say 1-2GB. And any video settings changes you need to deal with on servers more so than singleplayer. For LAN games no idea, just adding them in since some people do still use them for like in-house or family games on PC you know. I'm no expert, just my experience as well as the 4GB for big modpacks I hear get said a lot.
Go with what your computer runs the game out for chunks, video settings and whatever else you personally use the game for. If you do need it just bump it up 1GB each time you feel it needs it or so. Go with what works for you personally.

Moderatorallocate what you need, there is no exact answer.
