I don't know how well old instances on the new launcher work but even with the previous I find it wasn't very good, even for 1.0. So I used other launchers like Twitch & Multi-MC or even Technic just so the java files would work. But as a mod player and one that never had to deal with modloader and so on since I started Minecraft in 1.4.5. Instances on the Vanilla/Standard launcher can be awkward. Just from my experience.
