In my experience this error has nothing to do with insufficient Java heap space (the memory you allocate in JVM arguments) but insufficient process memory (OpenGL uses uses native memory outside of Java), though if you have 3 GB allocated it probably isn't the same thing since youc an only allocate that much with 64 bit Java (I have a 32 bit system and this error has occurred when I allocated 1 GB and used Far render distance (1.6.4 even warns you if you have 32 bit Java and set it on Far) but has never occurred with 512 MB allocated, which is also all the game really needs unless you want to use extreme render distance (vanilla 1.8+ won't even let you use 16+ chunks unless you allocate 2+ GB, though Optifine might have no such restriction) HD texture packs (a 512x pack will easily swallow a couple gigs, 1024 times more than the default pack needs), or use many mods (which is more due to them being poorly coded). I suppose it could still occur on a 64 bit system if your are low on system memory (beware that Java uses around twice as much memory as you allocate to it, at least for lower amounts, and reserves the entire max heap space so nothing else can use that memory even if the game only uses a fraction of it).

3GB ... and? ? I allocated 3 gigabytes, but on F3 it shows that only 1 gigabyte
Minecraft uses as much RAM as it needs. Update your Nvidia drivers.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
