My Minecraft worked for a day with the new launcher on Windows 10 and then I could hardly get past the loading screen. A handful of times I was able to log onto a multiplayer server (until a resource pack was necessary to continue playing, then it crashed) and that is when I first noticed everybody with the generic starting skin including myself. Three times I was able to get a specific crashing message (other times it just hung at loading terrain until I forced it to close): The game crashed whilst initializing game / Error: org.lwjgl.LWJGLException: Pixel format not accelerated. Other replies to posts said this meant my system does not meet the requirements to run Minecraft but my computer definitely does. I got a tech savvy friend to take a look and he got it to work by using an old version of the launcher (1.6.84). So I can now play Minecraft but still without the skins. Every other post I saw that had a helpful reply said to use HijackThis. I went ahead and downloaded that but I am not able to view a "log file" because it says they are in the middle of releasing a new version of the program. Is there anything else I can do?

Try temporarily disabling your OS's firewall just to troubleshoot. Remember to enable it after.
