I bought the game legitly from the official website, so I'm not a pirate. (I only mention this because the solutions on other forums is always a variation of "Just buy the game, pirate!") I installed and started the game without problems. I'm currently staying on version 1.11.2. I have a few mods installed, but I never had a problem with them.
This morning my computer technically had an internet connection, but it was so slow that it was worthless. This was 100% my ISP's fault. For some reason, they always slow down mine and others internet speed late at night, and this sometimes persist till morning. I tried to play minecraft during this time, because it was my understanding that this is an offline game. However, this was not the case.
Attempts to start the game resulted in a pop up that stated something like, "Minecraft Launcher Updater. Downloading native launcher." There was also a progress bar. As far as I can tell, the game itself never tried to start. I attempted to bypass the launcher but was unsuccessful. However, I also didn't really know how to do that.
Is there a way to play this offline? I read that this is supposed to be an option. I never had a proble with the game till this morning.

To stop the launcher from updating, simply disconnect from the internet, then start the launcher.
