I think it's something to do with your monitor's aspect ratio. The problem has been posted a lot but the answers are a little sketchy. One was solved by altering the aspect ratio of the monitor. I'll keep looking.
Yeah, so many others with that error and nearly all of them say it's because Minecraft is widescreen and the user with the missing sword/pickaxe etc is using a more square monitor. Windowed mode should allow you to see everything or just change the aspect ratio of the game to match the monitor.

You could try changing the game size in the settings in the launcher, just to see?
How old is your monitor? It must be ancient if it is still in 4:3 format.
