Earlier I opened Minecraft after not having power, let alone Internet, for several hours during the storm. (I was, and am currently on a personal hotspot connection because Comcast is still out, and it is a little on the slow side). Anyway, when I opened the launcher, I had to log in again (because I was on a different network than the previous time I logged in), and when I did, just as normal, I was taken to the first page of the launcher. I clicked the big green PLAY button at the bottom only for it to go gray for several seconds and then come back with an error: "We were unable to download this version. Please try again later." Apparently the launcher redownloads the game every time you play.
Then after like 20 SECONDS, I clicked PLAY again and it worked! So the whole issue was just a fluke. Can someone tell me what happened and how much later "later" is?

Considering you location I would guess mobile data is being used by everyone so it will be slow. Thus the error. And later means what it says, later, it doesn't have an exact time.
