I am having issues with nether portals on my vanilla server and the issue is also happening in single player for the same world, so it's not the server. I downloaded the save file and ran it and I have the same issues on my pc. I understand the mathematical concept of Overworld/Nether portal linking as I've been successfully linking them for years. My friend was running this world on his personal server and then his computer stopped so he sent the world to me. I uploaded the world to my server. We had a few nether portals linked in the world to a few different houses. I made a new portal approximately 200 blocks away from any other portal in the Overworld and went through, I came out through an existing portal. Odd. So I went 2000 blocks away in the overworld and built another portal, went through. I came out through a different existing portal in the same area as the first one I came out through. So I went to 0,0 (x,z) and built a portal and then went to the nether through a different portal and built a portal at 0,0 (x,z) in the nether. I went back to the overworld and went through my 0,0 portal and came out through the proper one in the nether. I went back in and the game created a whole new portal around 300,100 in the overworld and I came out there. I broke that Overworld portal went back to the nether, went through the 0,0 portal and it created another new one around 400,150 above an ocean. This went on a few times and then started going through the cycle again very near the locations the other portals the game created were at. This is very frustrating as we can't make new links anywhere.
I understand the coordinates divided by 8 calculation. I've broken about 20 portals now that were automatically created. I have a portal at 0,0 in the overworld. By extremely simple math, the Nether portal is at 0,0 because any number times 0 is still 0. The problem is that the game is ignoring the portal at the EXACT coordinates that should link and it is creating it's own.
