I haven't played in a while so i need to update to the newest version but when i press play it begins to download 1.12 then a little box pops up that says it was unable to save the download. I've deleted and redownloaded Minecraft itself a few times to see if that would help and it hasn't.

ModeratorYou have bytefence installed? If so remove it.
