I have this really cool map downloaded that's a scale model of California, but the default game mode is survival and cheats are not on. I really want to fly around and explore the map, but I can't do that in survival mode. Is there any way I could edit the save file to make the game mode creative?
NOTE- I do not know how to open most file types (.json, .java, etc.)

Remember those versions that minecraft pranked us with? Specifically:
Minecraft 2.0
Minecraft 1.VR-Pre1
Snapshot 15w14a
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.

Get NBTExplorer here: https://github.com/jaquadro/NBTExplorer/releases/tag/v2.7.6.-win
Install it and open it.
There will be a list of worlds, expand the one you want to change.
Then expand "level.dat," then "Data: # entries."
Double click "allowCommands:" and change it to 1. Then click Ok.
At the top, click the save button to save the world.
Go into the world and change your gamemode via commands.
