Are you experiencing any strange missing or corrupt chunks? They will look like a tower of seemingly random terrain that obviously does not belong there in a 16x16 block area with sometimes different biomes entirely within the chunk. They may also appear as a 16x16 hole in the ground that goes very deep.
The reason you can't play on a world with a newer version and go back to an older version is because it has new features and blocks in it from the new version which the old version will not be able to use. For example, if I create a world in 1.12 and the new 1.12+ blocks are created in that world, when I go back to load it in 1.10, those blocks don't exist since they are only available in 1.12 or above, and instead only the blocks 1.10 supports will be available. These missing blocks and features can cause some strange problems, and while it is possible to load a newer world into an older version, I would recommend against it. If you have to load it into an older version, I suggest you make a backup of your world files first. You can search online how to do that in your %appdata%/roaming/.minecraft folder.

I have a Minecraft world that has so much progress, but now it when I try looking for a huge house I built, its gone...
I checked coordinates from old screenshots, but those wont work either...
Hopefully someone knows how to fix this!
Edit: I think this has something to do with the updates...
I am also wondering, how come I can't use older versions of Minecraft without getting an error?
