I am playing minecraft 1.12 on Ubuntu 14.04 (8 GB RAM), and recently the client is lagging extremly. I restarted the computer, make sure no firefox is open, and that the graphics option are reduced to the extreme minimal (all turned off or minimal). I also use JVm Arguments in the "Profile Editor" and changed -Xmx1G to -Xmx3G or -Xmx4G, and reniced the java proces to -15.
Nothing helps, the lag becomes unbearable aftrer a few minutes of play with lags extending 1 seconds quite often and sometimes 2 seconds (meaning you see a 'picture' and it changes after 1-2 seconds). Impossible to play under these curcumstances.
I was better before, but for some unknown reason minecraft has become extremly lagging. So what can I di? Is there a 'fast' client version available? Is there a way to reduce the graphics even more? There must be some way to get this game playable again on a 8GB machine!!
Sounds like a garbage collection issue. Put simply, minecraft uses up memory at a steady rate, and once it's all used up, something called the garbage collector comes along and "un-uses" all that memory. The problem is that the garbage collector doesn't get involved until there's little or no memory left, so if you have a huge amount of memory allocated, then it also has a huge amount to "clean up". Depending on the exact amount, this can take several seconds. The solution to this is to decrease how much memory you have allocated to minecraft. That way, the garbage collector gets involved more often, and doesn't have anywhere near as much to do each time, so it's much faster. Usually it's done in a fraction of a second. Rule of thumb: allocate enough memory for it to run, and don't increase it after that. 1 GB should be more than enough for vanilla. Also, keep an eye on your memory usage in the top right of the F3 memu. It'll tell you how much you're using at any given time.
On the info in the upper right it's never over 15% RAM usage. So does it mean I need a faster CPU? I have a Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU 2020M @ 2.40GHz. Is that not enough to smoothly play minecraft?
What else can I try? What other information do you require to help me?

"More RAM more POWER!!!" - greatest myth in human history. Seriously, post more PC details than "I have 8 GB RAM, so my PC is the greatest."

I made my own shader pack, by the way.
