I originally tried to play a couple days ago after a years absence from the game, on the latest update, 1.12. When I got into the server list I click on one, and all went well, until I got to the "Downloading terrain..." screen. No more than 1-2 seconds, and on the window title, Minecraft has stopped responding. I thought "Oh maybe it's because the update contains so much new stuff, my computer isn't used to it. So I went down to 1.11, the same thing happened. Then I tried 1.9. Same problem. On 1.8, I tried to create a singleplayer world, and on the "Building terrain" screen, it didn't stop responding. It just never finished. It stayed on that screen until I closed Minecraft a minute later. Please help! I really want to play Minecraft again! After the not responding, the only way to close it is by ending the process in Task Manager.
Versions Tested:
1.8
1.9
1.11
1.11.2
1.12
Also I've messed with the JVM arguments a little but anything over -Xmx3G just doesn't load Minecraft.
I'm on a Windows 10 PC, with 8GB of RAM installed. (Doesn't tell me how much I have left.)
I don't. 3G i cant even get minecraft opened. Using 1G, i can make it to the server list, click on a server and get to Downloading Terrain... before the game stops responding.
And after looking at the link you gave, I will try the solutions there once I am back on the computer.
(I have two computers, as of right now I only have the Windows 7)

Dont allocate that much, it makes it worse. Leave it at the default 1G
