Just downloaded 1.12. chopped some wood and made an axe and a pick. I got the upper right hand corner window saying to check my recipe book. I opened my inventory and there is not recipe book by the shield slot in inventory.
When you make a crafting bench the recipe book should show up to the side when you click on the bench to use it. I don't think a "recipe book" is included in the inventory.
I know its not an actual recipe book, I've used the bench a couple of times and there's not recipe book option. I even watched a video on youtube to make sure I was looking in the right place and I was. Ive no idea why I can't get the recipe book in inventory,
As yoiu can see in the screenie, here is what I get in inventory.
Only thing I can think of is that you have a custom resource pack installed (which would overwrite the changes they made to the GUI, hiding the book icon). Try turning it off if you do.
Execute this command:
/give @p minecraft:knowledge_book 1
HInt copy all but the "/" then in your world type / and hit ctrl-v and enter.

OK, I just tried entering "/give @p minecraft:knowledge_book 1" while in /gamemode 0 and it worked.
I ended up with a book in my inventory.
I just started a new world in PCMCv1.12.
Punched enough of a tree to get some logs.
Crafted a craft table (this doesn't work for me the first time WITHOUT a craft table)
I DID NOT give myself a knowledge book.
Opened the craft table and left clicked the open area just to the left of the middle left square in the crafting grid and the recipe book appeared.
Clicking the same spot again will make the recipe book to disappear.
The "magic" spot when viewing inventory is directly below the middle vertical bar of the 2x2 crafting grid.

OOPS!!!!! I was using a resource pack that seemed to work well with the 1.12 snapshots but is missing the recipe book graphic. (KoP 1.12 V1 64 P.R.zip)

'Old' Codger using Minecraft 1.12 on Windows 10 - Mostly in Creative mode.
I had the same issue this morning. It turns out that it was missing because I had a 1.11 texture pack installed. I removed the texture pack and the recipe book showed up.

As oCrapaCreeper suggested, maybe a resource pack or something is interfering.

Changed to Faithful 1.12-rv1.zip and you can see the difference below.
