Back in late 2011, I played Minecraft with my two sons. I think the only way to do this back then was to run my own local server. For a number of reasons, I am trying to find the old world we built together. I am pretty sure the files I have are the right ones, but when I open them in new Minecraft single player, the go through a conversion process and then appear all screwed up (none of the worlds that we built together are there, just random terrain). I am heartbroken and trying to figure out how to see the old worlds (assuming my files are valid ones). Is there a way I can look at the saved world file and tell what version of Minecraft they were last opened in? My strategy is maybe to open them in that older version (but that might not even work since I don't know that "server" files could be opened locally back in that day). That said, I still have the server it ran on, but I am not sure how to startup the server and join it (where do I find the legacy documentation?) Anyway, sorry for a nostalgic old man's plea for help, but maybe there is an older version of MCedit (circa 2011) that would at least let me see if the world is really there (I can't open it in a current MCedit without first opening it in today's Minecraft to go through the conversion.)

You still have a copy of the old world? If so, try finding a older version of MCEdit that reads that format. There were 3 world formats only so it shouldnt be long before you find a compatible one

It might have been 1.64 beta but I am making progress. How can I tell which worlds were explored most? Does file size of the saves give me a hint? What I have noticed is that if all three of us were playing a world, we would each have a file in player folder.
Can someone remind me, circa late 2011 and early 2012, was Minecraft Server just if I wanted outside people (Internet) to join our game or would I have needed that to play across the LAN with my two sons? All we did was LAN games early on.
OK, so I think most of my worlds are version 1.0 (the first post-beta releases). Are there any world viewers like MCedit that work with 1.0 files? My spawn points may be screwed up and I can't fly around in creative mode (there was none then) and I am trying to find a quick way to explore a world.
