I have a pretty decent budget gaming setup. It runs witcher 3 on ultra with 30fps +. But when i play minecraft, i it is super intensive on my cpu.
Usually when i play games like the witcher it runs at 30% but when i play minecraft its at everywhere between 50-100%. I'm trying to figure out what causes this massive spike in cpu usage. I get an fps between 15-55. Its really weird, i'm trying to figure out if its the chunk loading that's creating the lag or something else. It doesn't seem to be associated with anything i can see.
I can have high quality settings and render distance set to 22 and i get 40 fps while loading chunks and sometimes with low settings and a render distance of 8 (normal) i suddently get 20fps. I would say i generaly have 30-50fps for 1-5 minutes, then it changes to 15-25fps for another 1-5 minutes and then it changes to high fps again. My point here is that it doesn't make a difference if i have low quality settings or high, if my render distance is set to far or close, if i'm currently loading chunks or not. It goes up and down anyhow.
My specs:
-Amd athlon 4x 845 quad core 3,5ghz processor
-Ati rx 460 saphire 4gb video card
-8gb ram
-240gb ssd (dont know if this is necessary information)
Windows 10 64bit
What i have already tried:
1. I have tried to add minecraft and the java exe file to my video card settings to make sure that it was optimized for it. This didn't make a difference and in the f3 menu in MC it tells me its running the game on the right card.
2. I have allocated more ram. I have tried everything from 1gb to 6gb and it doesn't make a difference.
3. I have tried running the game on java 32 bit, but it crashes. It only wants to run it on my 64 bit java.
4. I have updated both java 32 and 64bit and made sure that they are the only two versions of java i have.
5. I have tried to install optifine but this doesnt make a difference. I even tried changing the setting to the lowest i could bare playing with, and it still gave me pretty low fps.
6. I have made sure that my drivers are up to date.
Oh and its probably worth mentioning that when i'm in the esc menu (settings etc) the fps is boosted up to 110, but as soon as i enter the game it is down to normal again.
I hope someone out there knows what the problem is. I have googled around for hours and i just cant seem to find a solution. It really seems like my cpu is the bottleneck but i think it should be able to run minecraft without issues...
Minecraft is a CPU intensive game and the bit of Minecraft that would run on a GPU are mods like Shaders. Seeing that you use an Athlon 4x 845, you would need to use a texture pack with not a lot of defined textures like how packs like Faithful 16x have, or get a new CPU, meaning you would need a new Mobo, because of FM2+ being dead. I don't think you would do that just for Minecraft, but you should still consider it, with the fact that you would be able to run other games well. Like I said, Minecraft is a CPU intensive game and the CPU you currently use has a infrastructure that isn't suited for CPU intensive games.

Right.. so i see that this is something people argue about all the time, but i got some more information on my issue. It turns out, it's not minecraft's fault. I was running vanilla MC through the technic launcher and that gave me lag, but when i run the game through the vanilla launcher, i get 100fps on avarage. So that means that it's something wrong with the technic launcher, so i will post about it over on their forum.
