I've looked everywhere for an answer to this. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Minecraft and still nothing has changed. I'm using the new launcher. When I try to launch the game, most of the time, the launcher will close but remain open in the background, and, because of that, Minecraft itself won't launch. I have to close both instances of MinecraftLauncher.exe via Task Manager, and then Minecraft will open. If I tell the launcher to remain open when Minecraft starts, most of the time, after I hit the play button, the launcher will crash and Minecraft will open. Both of these are clearly bugs and I'm wondering if they've been fixed yet. I'm very sure uninstalling and reinstalling Minecraft with MinecraftInstaller.msi includes the launcher. I downloaded Minecraft_staging.zip from the Reddit thread where the new launcher was first announced and my OS is Windows 7.

You need to download the latest version from the official website; the link you use is likely for an early test version which understandably would have bugs:
For comparison, this is the download link on Minecraft.net; using the above link is like downloading a snapshot instead of a release and it is not necessarily going to be updated (none of the alternative download links match the above either):

don't download the launcher from ANYWHERE but the official Minecraft website. May not be your issue, but it's still general good advice.

I downloaded it from here. Sure, it's not the official Minecraft website, but Dinnerbone himself set up and released the download.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I tried that download. I uninstalled and reinstalled Minecraft using it, but still no difference to the launcher.
