I have recently tried to get back into playing Minecraft after ~2 1/2 years away (hadn't played since 1.8). I booted it up, it naturally updated to the newest version of minecraft, and I created a new world. I loaded into it, and all was well for about 10 seconds, the game froze, and an error window popped up ("Java(Tm) Platform SE binary has stopped working")

This occurred after updating Java, resorting to the older launcher (searched and saw it causes problems), and even a clean wipe and re-installation.
I would appreciate all the assistance I can get
