Running VirusBarrier with real-time scanning enabled
Running OpenDNS with some fairly restrictive filters (started this since most previous update)
I was running one minecraft account for 2 kids. I've decided to let them do the network thing, and got a second account. When I clicked the box to manage accounts on the loader screen, the game crashed. Now when MC is opened it attempts to update the launcher (Downloading Runtime), gets all the way through the ~120MB download 3 times and then provides me an error of "Unable to update the Minecraft Native Launcher"
I've located the logs and will copy/pasta them below.
I've got parental controls on, and may have accidentally clicked-through a permissions request, so this may be system-level on my end. The log indicates a 0kb file and/or a hash mismatch. Reboots did not fix anything. The same error occurs on my administrator account.
Hash issue could be server-side, so I'll try again tomorrow (4/13/17)

Returned to describe my fix, since I haven't seen this reported before.
So, this did turn out to be a permissions issue. I had originally installed the game under a different account with administrator privileges. Once I tried to run minecraft from that account, the updater ran fine, updated the game, and now I have 2 happy kids. I guess I'll just have to keep returning to that original admin account.
It's a Mac. With *nix style permissions hierarchy. These permissions don't transfer unless you specifically tell them to, and I'm nervous about "chown"ing a thing that will be used by kids.
Computer savvy, but my kids are the minecrafters.

Uninstall/Disable VirusBarrier and check that OpenDNS is not blocking AWS. That issue is caused by AV

Good to know.
Running chown -R username:username minecraftdir shouldnt have caused any problems either
