Today the official/standard launcher updated itself (without updating Minecraft itself), and decided to delete everything in the "saves" directory for no reason (and also wipe out all my setting for video, sound, controls, etc).
This also happened the last time the launcher updated, and I lost everything. Since then whenever I see the launcher update I panic and backup my worlds, and didn't lose everything this time.
I'm using "pure vanilla" - official/standard launcher, official/standard Minecraft (in single-player), no mods whatsoever (not even texture packs), standard (Oracle) Java, etc. I'm running it on Windows 8 (also nothing unusual) on a relatively standard gaming PC (Core i7 4770, 32 GiB of RAM, ...).
As far as I'm concerned the launcher is malicious. There is no reason to destroy months of someone's work.
