I'm new to minecraft adn learning from the wiki, and finally got my redstone to craft a map so I can find my way around. Well my map has filled up with the area around me but hwen I hold the map and move around my little pointer icon on the map, doesn't move or change position. at all. I just ran around for 20 minutes trying to get a feel for the map and it didn't help at all. I got lost and the pointer position stayed the same. Am I doing something wrong or bug?
here's a screen shot. I thought he triangle was me and it's not moving but then I noticed the large DOT on the edge was moving but when I turn left or right it doesn't go into the map it just goes up or down the edge. can someone explain how to use the map so I can find why way around?
Yes north is up, the maps align to a grid instead of having players position as the center. That is so that the maps can be align perfectly when placed side by side in item frames.

The white dot is your position, in this case outside of the map. Go in the north-eastern direction.
so looking at this map north is up and west is to the left? East is to the right?
Why did this map craft like this with me off the map?
thanks for the help.
