I have gone through Minecraft support on this, and they are unable to figure out what was going on.
I have Minecraft for Mac, and I tried to download the new update. When I was in the launcher and tried to play the game, I got the following message:
Failed to download file. idle1.ogg
I have done some research on this, and it usually is due to a firewall or third party antivirus software. I have the firewall on my Mac turned off, and I do not have third party antivirus. As I said before, the kind tech support folks at Mojang were unable to figure out what was wrong. The only workaround we found was to download and install the older launcher, but that will prevent me from running the newer features on the game.
ByteFence is known to cause issues with Minecraft's installing and updating process. You will need to uninstall it. Steps can be found in the mod notice here: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCL-5546
