I've been researching my ass off to find a solution to why Modded Minecraft1.10.2 have extreme latency and low fps (lag). I have about 120 mods for 1.10.2 with 4gb allocated in the game's advance launcher settings, and I was told for modded 1.10.2, you need to give 4gb of ram because of vanilla mechanics.
So I wondered, what in the vanilla settings/configuration I could change or what mod helps with vanilla Minecraft using so much ram? The only mod I found was betterfps, and still I ran the game at 25-30 compared to 1.7.10 modded with 80-100 fps with 2gb allocated. I also learned that the "sweet spot" for running Minecraft smoothly is to give it about 2-3gb of ram.
For 1.10.2, I gave it 4gb because when I tried to give it 2-3, the launcher always freeze or crash because it "ran out of memory". When the game finally loads, I configure my settings to low settings for faster fps, and I still get around 40-50 fps compared to 1.7.10 with high fancy graphics, render distance 10-11 with 80-100 fps. But even with the low settings, I still get latency, as in I break a block and it reappears in the same place I broke it, and after 3 tries of breaking the damn block, it breaks and I can pick it up. When I make a jetpack or an angel ring to fly, I keep getting sent back to a previous spot or chunk when I fly place to place from bases I built. (I was able to build small bases but it was such a hassle with the latency and blocks breaking lag after 3 or 4 tries, uggh)
So I would really like to have dialogue with professionals or coders who know what's going on with 1.10.2 having latency issues and low fps, and dialogue with other players who experience similar issues. Rather if it's a mod causing the latency/low fps, the amount of ram allocation or usage, or Minecraft vanilla mechanics. If the issues I'm talking about has nothing to do with forge, or the mods I have, and it's specifically with vanilla then I'll move this topic over to the vanilla unmodded support section. I think.
Please give insight if you know about modded 1.10.2 having these issues, or express similar experience with your game. I know I can't be the only one who's having these problems with 1.10.2 right?

I think I found the solution. I have the surge mod installed and when I type in the command, /surge animation, it disables the animations (I guess) and my fps boosted like crazy, went from 30 to 80 fps just like that.

I know other players who had the same problem that it crashes on start-up, either because they need to allocate 4gb of ram, change the javaw.exe path file to where you installed java (64-bit), or research if you're having compatibility issues with the mods you have.
Do you have a log? I'm getting good at understanding/reading logs and can probably help you find a solution.
I am very happy to have found this conversation. A couple weeks ago my MC 1.10.2 instance worked perfecrly, I have an older computer so am used to 30-40 fps with a few tech mods and other lite mods (13 total) and a custom resource pack. Then the next day all of a sudden it is unplayable. It will load and work fine for about 2-3 minutes and then completely freezes up requiring a ctrl-alt-delete exit. It does not crash ever just does this freeze EVERY time now.
I've done crazy research, reloaded the game and all mods, made sure forge and Java (64x) were up to date, even played around with the Java arguments and still the same issue. **Except SOMETIMES with certain Java arguments changed for ram allocation it works like normal but I can't find a pattern or something that works consistently.
This has been very frustrating.
**I've been working on this SPS since 1.10.2 was released and have an embarrassing amount of time invested so anything I can do to fix this woupd be appreciated. (AND with RC finally being pumped out this is an extra bummer..)

The exact same thing have been happing to me before when my game would freeze or when I load a world after 5 minutes, the world would just freeze or stop loading chunks even though I can move around. I still haven't found any particular reasons why modded 1.10.2 behaves this way, rather if a mod, Minecraft itself, ram allocation, graphics card settings or cpu usage, or java. But after extensive researching of what mods cause lag and which mod can help reduce lag, I found out that the surge mod improves performance.
As in my previous statement above, I typed in the command, while in game, /surge animation and my fps boosted significantly. Also, I learned that 1.10.2 modded requires 4gb of ram to run smoothly, because of vanilla mechanics and other aspects. Having big mods, even though you might have 10 or 20 mods installed, would still require more ram. I know some mods, at least for me, that causes lag such as FastLeafDecay, and Agricraft Alpha for 1.10.2.
Also if you manage to load the game, configure your settings like Max Framerate, lower it because the game would get sloppy on loading chunks correctly. For me I put it at 70 to 80 frames, and my game runs smooth like butter. Also if you choose to, betterfps does help in boosting fps a little, maybe optifine if you have an old computer with little ram. Also I would suggest turning off mipmap by setting it to 0, especially if you have an old pc.
In the launcher, I learn to change your javaw.exe path to where you installed JAVA (64-bit) "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_121\bin\javaw.exe" in the advance options settings, not where Minecraft auto creates the javaw.exe file path. Going full screen might help to reduce lag. Also you should see which mod takes up more loading time when you launch the game.
I'm still doing research on what mod causes lag, which mod helps reduce lag, what settings in game helps reduce lag, graphics card/cpu configuration to help improve performance, which mods have instability/compatibility issues (for 1.10.2), and what settings in the launcher for java helps the game start up. So far I have: change java path file, the surge mod command /surge animation, betterfps (or optifine if you must) to help performance, mods like FastLeafDecay and Agricraft for 1.10.2 that causes lag, and change Max Framerate settings to a lower framerate (for me it's 70-80 or 120). Also, update JAVA (64-bit) and update your display/graphics card in Device Manager.
SOOO, I've had some time to mess around with my setup this evening using some of your suggestions and so far it appears to be working with 40-60 fps consistantly!! So I've trial and error a few other changes, this is what I did..
*-Changed JVM ram allocation from 3800 to 1980 MB
-limited fps to 80 (always had at unlimited)
-went backwards a version of optifine (D7 back to C3) and played around with these settings more
-added betterfps
*I had read that over allocating ram could have been a big cause and I thought since I was using a few very large tech mods the near 4gb would have been ideal but Aparently not. I would suggest slowly walking back your ram allocation by 64mb at a time and see if it gets more and more stable, that's what I did and that is what really made a difference in the game not freezing. The other changes from you I think are contributing to higher fps then I've ever had in about almost a year I think on 1.10.2 . Thanks!!! I'll update if anything else changes

The thing I've found out is my game is running fast after tweaking and configuring settings, but it might be the SSP latency from either Minecraft itself or forge. My frames is at a stable 85-100 fps, but it feels like I'm playing on a lagging server because it still happens to be when I break a block and it doesn't break. It keeps reappearing after so many tries of just building and mining, it's very frustrating. So I'm still having the latency problem, but my frames are fine.
Its especially noticeable with the latency when I go near a jungle biome. I have Biomes-o-plenty and Realistic Terrain Generation, and when I create a world using whichever generation, I notice the latency, and sometimes lag, when I go near a jungle biome. It's also in BOP, when I go near a temperate forest or the redwood forest that I get latency and lag.
I never thought to have these issues with the new Minecraft 1.10.2 and forge. I thought everything would have new and improved updates from 1.7.10 because I really want to move past 1.7.10, but it's becoming unbearable to play on 1.10.2 with the mods I play from 1.7.10. I still have good frames, it's the latency and world rendering that's making it unbearable to play. I even tried optifine, and it helped with frames, but now I think it has to do with Minecraft itself or forge with the whole SSP connection, even though I play on single player worlds. It feels like I'm playing on an unbearable laggy server.
But I'll still keep researching to find solutions or a solution to why the new 1.10.2 and forge have so much latency, or which mod causes it.

OK, so since some mods I like got updated to 1.10.2, I decided to reinstall Minecraft and Forge with the mods I use for 1.10.2. So first hand, ofc when I load a world it lags horribly. So I decided to add optifine and configure some settings. I used to get 20-30 fps, now I'm getting 60-70. I also reinstalled or reset windows 10 because I had a virus, and reinstalled/updated my graphics and drivers.
Here's my settings in the video configurations. I also only have like 80 mods, so these settings might help with performance if you use them because it was a huge performance boost for me. I load a default world and it loads soo much faster, even when I load a biomes o plenty world. So by far I'm pleased with the performance.

I also left the Minecraft launcher advance options for the java path alone, and only change the setting for ram usage to 4gb. Also going full screen made the game play smoother and faster. So far, I can play as normal without the latency/lag, such as breaking a block and it picks up. But sometimes when I'm in a biomes-o-plenty world, the fps dips a bit when I go in a Redwood Forest Biome and Orchard Biome. Still, it's a much better improvement from previous settings.
I also made sure the mods I use were either in a stable release or updated release because some mods that's in alpha or beta does cause performance issues, like Agricraft, Steves Factory Manager Reborn, Streams,Foresty, from what I researched. I do have forestry and it seems to be working, but it might not for others. So just make sure you have the latest versions of the mods you use.
Edit: I had reinstalled Minecraft and tested a world. For the Performance settings, with optifine, I turn Smooth World: On, and Fast Render: On. I've also put the FPS limit to the default 120, and notice that the world was rendering faster. I also had COFH installed and forgot to change the generation config in the cofh json, because I always change the settings in the common configs. I figured, could it be cofh changing how minecraft renders when I change the replacevanillageneration option to true in the configs?
So I played in a world with the replacevanillageneration option set to true, and I was getting latency but still good fps around 40-60. I played on another world wit the setting set to false, and it was rendering normal and very fast. I was getting 90-100 fps! So I was guessing, could it be cofh replacevanillageneration as to why my Minecraft worlds was lagging and/or having latency? Because I changed my settings to low settings for gameplay, but still wasn't satisfied with the games latency and lag. But now it running smooth and very fast. And I also removed the Surge mod and added BetterFps.
I've been researching my ass off to find a solution to why Modded Minecraft 1.10.2 have extreme latency and low fps (lag).
