This is a direct copy/paste from a topic I made earlier on the wrong board. Sorry about that. Could a mod please delete the version in the "General Minecraft" board?
I've been playing the new Direwolf20 mod pack for a while now. For my birthday, I got a new CPU and motherboard, upgrading from an Intel Core 2 Duo to an Intel i5 CPU and a motherboard that could support it. I also had to upgrade the RAM so it would physically fit into the motherboard, so I now have a single 8 GB stick of RAM. I'm still using the same graphics card, an AMD Radeon R7 card, but it's pretty good and runs nearly everything I've thrown at it so far with minimal issues. (The only game that didn't run perfectly was Fallout 4, and I'm fairly certain that it was CPU issues with that one.)
Normally when I played the pack, it would lag for about 15-20 seconds while it rendered the area, and then I could play with everything going reasonably smoothly. Now when I play, it lags unbelievably and never picks up. This really sucks because I accidentally deleted my old world and am needing to start over. (not a big deal, I learned enough of how the different mods work that I needed to completely overhaul my base from scratch anyways)
You would think that an upgrade like this would speed things up, but it just got worse. I even went into the launcher and bumped up the RAM allocated from 4 GB to 6 GB, but it didn't help any.
By "reinstall", do you mean the re-activation setup? My PC came with Windows pre-installed, so all I could really do with it was re-activate Windows 10 and put in that I had changed hardware. I will look into updating the drivers, that does sound like it should help.
Well, i have moved from Win 7 to Win10 for the first time so i dont really know about how it works the pre-installed Win10 license, you can try that first and see if it works, but dont forget you must have 64-bits Java installed and your OS must also be 64-bits, if it is a 32-bit Windows then Java will work as 32-bits aswell, also like urielsalis said do not allocate more than 4G to JVM arguments in your profile, more allocated memory being unused doesnt mean minecraft will run faster, it may be even worse for some mods, i have myself 4G with 216 mods and it works pretty fine
Or dont install java ata all and the launcher downloads the correct one
You shouldnt allocate more than you need, if you give it too much, the GC has to cleanup a big chunk instead of a small chunk of memory which freezes for longer
I'm still having this problem. I've updated all of the drivers that I could think of, for my CPU, motherboard, and GPU. I've looked in the Radeon settings for something that looks like it would help, but found nothing. I've updated Java. I've turned down all of the video settings, including render distance.
For crying out loud, I'm even just standing in a freaking cave in-game so the game doesn't even have to render much to the screen, and I still get enough input lag that gameplay is next to impossible! Even looking at the detailed debug information that comes up with F3 shows that it's using my GPU and not the integrated graphics, so that doesn't seem to be the problem either.
*sigh* I ended up spending over 200 dollars on the new parts for my PC, and one of the things that I was hoping it was improve was my Minecraft game. I was having problems before where the game seemed to not be able to keep track of all of the machines processing in my power generator room, and was hoping that the upgraded CPU would give it a bit of help in that regard. I know that my computer should be able to play this, because I was obviously able to play it fairly well before (with initial lag on starting the game since it was having to render everything). I can even run some seemingly difficult games on this thing without much problem. Earlier today, I was running a Wii-U emulator and playing Super Mario 3D World at damn-near full speed! Minecraft should work at the very least the same that it did before!
The only thing that I didn't do was paste ".minecraft" into the "Roaming" folder. I looked to do that, but realized that I'm using the FTB Launcher, which looks like it uses its own "Roaming" folder to run each mod pack.
Does anybody have any other ideas on how to get this game working again?
For me it sounds strange that you spend money on upgrading some parts of your PC but now you get even less fps than before, that makes no sense, obviously you are doing something wrong at some point, maybe your gpu itself is not good for minecraft, or maybe your world is even more machine-stuffed than me, in that case you should try the Opis mod, large amounts of tile.entities cause a lot of lag too, you can try a new world to check if it gives you lag aswell, if it does, then its not a minecraft problem, it is your computer
If you are playing MC 1.7.10 or below you should know that it just uses one core at a time, so buying a cpu with more cores is a bad choice, i had a 8-core amd 3,4GHz before, now i have a Intel core i7 7700K 4,5GHz, because the games i still play are single-threaded
Minecraft is multithreaded too, one for the GC, one per dimension and I dont remember if they are more

Not in 1.7.x and below, it is indeed multithreaded in newer versions, which helps if you have farms in other dimensions because they are run in separate threads, anyways Kurt91 didn't specify which version he is playing
If he didnt specify, think 1.11.2 that is the latest(and has some mods), 1.10.2 that has more mods or 1.8 that also have most mods, 1.7.10 is beyond old already

I finally fixed it! I got frustrated, deleted absolutely everything and redownloaded it all. Figured if it didn't work, I'd just give up. I don't know why, but it started working properly right off the bat. I'm a little annoyed because I spent God knows how long tweaking settings and trying to get things working, and reinstalling the game did it without any extra effort from me.
So on the bright side, I've got Minecraft working again! The bad news is, I attend college and have classes I have to get to. My sleep schedule is screwed now that I've got Minecraft working again and have a lot of catching up to get to where I was before...

1) Dont allocate more RAM, makes it worse
2) Report the other post to be deleted
3) Press F3 while in game and make sure you are using the r7 card(that btw, its bottlenecking your whole setup) instead of the igpu

Sorry, I've been offline for the weekend while visiting my family.
Anyways, I've been using 1.10.2 and having trouble. That's the version of Minecraft that Direwolf20's newest mod-pack runs off of.
