Preface: I'm not too well versed; this is project is really only about six hours in (with research) with little prior networking experience, but I believe this one's a doozy, please bear with me.... My friend and I are attempting to set up a (ALMOST POSITIVELY IRRELEVANT: modded; can provide a list, and will be okay with a thread migration if relevant) 1.10.2 server on LAN (Note: no internet connectivity) for latency purposes (important to me), while simultaneously merged with a WAN (Note: has internet connectivity).
1) I, the Host, have win7, and can merge my networks. While merged I can successfully Host a LAN server for my friend (their client connected properly) AND still have internet connectivity outside minecraft (ie: effective, albeit for some reason significantly slower [In my not-so-humble opinion, I DOUBT it's a hardware resource issue, my Jarvis is absolutely jacked], in a browser) through WAN on my system.... With some stipulations: It is slow to start (as though using WAN); I cannot run my machine's Client Launcher in Online mode; and in Offline mode it reports I am missing game files (this issue resolves itself when I shut down my server, disable my ethernet adapter [effectively separating my merged networks] and run the Client Launcher solely on WAN to 'download' packages [I don't know what this is or why it does it], but will not 'keep' these files after retrying a re-merge).
2) This WILL work if I am only hosting on LAN, and I'm not particularly concerned with necessarily being an online client while we're playing, but the whole issue of the post boils down to I'd really like to be able to switch back and forth between playing and other internet-connective-reliant functions.
3) BONUS ROUND: My friend has Windows 8, and I have no idea what the heck is going on with that. (sorry, unnecessary statement here, but yes, I hate win8).......... I've yet to touch on this, and it's not AS important, but still... If there's a way to set it up as I have above (after a hopeful fix?) we'd be grateful.
Help?
EDIT* Tried a network bridge in addition to the merge, which worked. Sort of. It fixes nearly everything on my side, but ipconfig shows that it both overwrites my LAN IPv4 address with the WAN IPv4 address, and that it is now treated as one adapter; my friend now cannot connect.
Lets see..., why dont you host a server instead, edit server-ip so it uses the LAN, then tell windows to use the WAN to connect to everything else? No need to merge anything. Also, try in vanilla first before jumping to modded, troubleshooting gets easier. Last of all, the latency of having the internet connection being used at the same time you are hosting a server is neglible, plus it already gets mixed in the router

And that's the insight I needed. Wow. Headdesk. Eight hours now, hyperfocusing on the wrong thing and all I had to do was force ip in the server config. Thanks loads
On the plus side, I learned loads.
And, just for funsies, this ip shouldn't change on the LAN between startups and such? Also sorry for the misnomer of WAN-WLAN through the whole post lol.
*edit: Ah. No. Client Launcher host-side issues are persisting, how do I go about making everything else use WLAN?

You can set it in windows and your router to a static one if you like

Telling windows to use WLAN for everything else seems easier said than done, can you point me in the right direction?

Okay now how do I (if I can) add a thread prefix tag for Resolved?
You can edit the title, no need really

It seems I can only edit the content of the OP, not tags or title. Ugh I need to sleep.
Use the full editor on the first post
