Hi there. I signed up to this forum just to find a solution to this issue. I bought a gaming laptop last July, and I was playing minecraft at 120 fps at 22 chunks of render distance, fancy graphics, full clouds, smooth lighting, the works. It was running great and buttery-smooth. Laptop specs at the end of post, but first some background:
I had not played minecraft for a little over a month, and when I went to play last week, it was running slow and lagging a bit. This shouldn’t happen, because it was running great before. I'm running other games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2 and they run amazingly well. I've never had problems with those. It's only minecraft that is running slowly.
What can I do to restore the smoothness of minecraft on my computer? What things do I have to do/change/update to do this?

I'd start with checking that your laptop isn't in power saver mode for the battery, even if it is plugged in, you'll see stutters and low fps if your battery isn't set to balanced or high-performance modes.
For the battery method, click the battery icon near your computer's clock in the lower right. Select power and sleep settings, then scroll down and click additional power plans, then select the power plan you want to use.
For setting Minecraft to use the GPU instead of the iGPU, click the show hidden icons button near your computer's clock in the lower right (Its the upward facing arrow) then select the Nvidia icon, and if you have installed GeForce experience, select the Nvidia Control Panel when the prompt comes up (It will just launch the control panel if you haven't installed GeForce experience) In the left hand side panel of the Nvidia Control Panel, click Manage 3D Settings. Change the Global Setting to be the Nvidia High-Performance processor. Then select Program Settings and select Minecraft in the drop down menu, make sure its set to use the global setting, and click Add.
To verify that Minecraft is using the GPU instead of the iGPU, press F3 in game and look in the top right for the line that says Display:
If it shows the 960m from Nvidia, Minecraft is using the GPU, if it shows HD Graphics from Intel, its using the iGPU.

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960m
I'd start with checking that your laptop isn't in power saver mode for the battery, even if it is plugged in, you'll see stutters and low fps if your battery isn't set to balanced or high-performance modes.
Make sure in the Nvidia Control Panel that Minecraft is using the graphics card instead of the igpu

iGPU = Integrated GPU
Sounds like your marketing all integrated GPUs as if they were apple products.

Considering they have the processing power of a potato when compared to a discrete GPU, they may as well be Apple products.
well, some newer ones atleast can pull their weight for non-games
