I was playing Minecraft tonight and got a message that my computer was low on memory and to close Java.
I have 3 GB allocated to Java. For those of you about say "that's too much RAM allocation", with 2 GB allocated, I ran into problems sometimes.
This seems like a rather serious issue. Is my PC is actually "using" all of my RAM? I don't understand what all of those categories mean (for example, I allocated 3 GB to Java, but I see three different values for the Java process, all of which are higher), but from what I can gather...
1) Task Manager shows ~10 GB "in use", but I'm being warned of low memory when there's seemingly 6 GB free? My video card has 6 GB of VRAM and wondered if that plays into it (why it would, I don't know, but it seems too coincidental).
2) I'm not sure how this "use" is defined, but Windows considered it in use and thus unavailable and that I lack memory, and that is the point, so effectively, Minecraft is "using" almost all of the RAM?
For now, I've raised my page file size (it was 1 GB before). I'm still concerned as to why RAM use is so high. Other that Firefox which is using about half of a GB of RAM, and Winamp which has such small relative memory use, practically nothing other than Minecraft is running.
This is with the game open to LAN and one other person playing (average use seemed to be between 1.8 GB and 2.2 GB, but I noticed it going to ~2.6 GB+ for a while and then this happened).
And thus I guess I need to allocate 4 GB to Java now. I'm not sure if playing Minecraft on a render distance of 32 is supposed to exhaust a PC with 16 GB of RAM or not...

32 render distance and Forge with mods? Yes that will use up a lot of memory. I too have 16GB and see similar results.
Good to know for comparison sake, although the only mods I'm using are OptiFine and Better Foliage.
Personally, I don't mind if it needs 4 GB or whatever allocated, and that doesn't surprise me TOO much given the circumstances, but I'm confused at my PC saying "you're out of memory" when I have 16 GB and it's more or less just Minecraft running. None of it adds up. 3 GB allocated becomes 10 GB in use, becomes "no available memory" with 6 GB unaccounted for? Are you seeing 7 GB to 10 GB in use per Task Manager as well like me?

Minecraft version 1.10.2
Forge 12.18.3.2185
OptiFine 1.10.2 HD_U_D6
Better Foliage 2.0.13
Any ideas? If I have something wrong can you please tell me?
Minecraft more or less froze.
