I'm using win7 to play.
There's a lot of moire and holes until I fix it by installing Optifine and selecting anisotropic.
I thought it was weird, but didn't think too much about it, until today.
Today I was testing MC on Lubuntu, and I realised that it was looking much better out of the box and gameplay smoother, even though the fps were a lot less than on windows.
Lubuntu: +70 fps
Win7:+100 fps
Gameplay on Lubuntu was perfect. On win7 it feels a bit choppy
I discovered that I also can fix that, by changing Mipmap levels from default 4 to 1, after reading this post:

Ok, and yes, I'm using propietary drivers and oracle. I'm just surprised at how smooth is in linux and not so much on win.
Only problem is I was quite happy with my environment on win7, using Curse for modpacks and stuff, and now I have to start setting everything up again. My kid likes testing new mobs and things from mods, and I have to switch versions all the time.
Anyways, problem is fixed now with mipmap 0, the rest is ok with me.

Why the default is looking so wrong?
Set mipmap to 0

Yes, thanks. I discovered that after posting.
That was one thing I didn't try, I kindda trusted minecraft defaults and only changed things to get more fps, but never changed mipmaps till today.
But still, it's the default, so why on linux is different than on windows?
Not sure, might be a driver thing
Also, for better performance on linux, get the propietary drivers and use oracle java, not openjdk

Glad it works!
