I have a local server that runs on my Son's mac - it is version 1.10.2, I did not do anything fancy to it beyond install it. My son then connects his client (also at 1.10.2) to this server and my daughter uses her pc to connect her client (also 1.10.2). They have been playing this way for many months.
Today the new version installed on both their machines. I started up the server on the mac and it seemed fine. My daughter's PC can connect to the server and she can play. However on the mac (same machine as the server) I get "Failed to connect to the server" Internal Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException.
How do I fix this? I have tried rebooting the mac and that did not help. This only started happening after the new version of minecraft installed and yes I did make sure I was running the client at 1.10.2 when we launched it.
Trend Micro HijackThis is a utility that is used to collect diagnostic reports of your computer to help narrow down an issue you may be having. Download: https://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/files/2.0.5 beta/HijackThis.exe/download
Run the program, choose "I accept", then "Do a scan and save a log file". After a while a text file will open. Copy everything, put the log on http://paste.ubuntu.com and give us the link.

Um, I did say that one machine was a windows machine (no errors) and the other was a mac (does give client error). How do I know I should trust running this on my computer - don't get me wrong, I appreciate the help - but doesn't minecraft have some kind of internal log file I can look for without installing something with the name "HijackThis".

Why are you hosting a server like this? Just use a lan world! Much less challenging.

Its from Trend Micro, a AV company, its just the name(you can search it on wikipedia too).
Doesnt run on Mac, and if the windows one doesnt give any errors its not worth it
To open a world to LAN press Esc and click Open to LAN
While "use a lan world" may be an excellent suggest - I would really like for my existing setup to work like it did before all this - at this point my kids have months of playing and building in a shared world and I would rather not mess with that.
I was able to figure out how to turn on logging form the new launcher screen. What happens when i lick the "Multiplayer" button is the following error is logged:
Unable to start LAN server detection: Can't assign requested address.
however the multiplayer screen opens just fine. If I click on our home server with will say:
Connecting to [the correct ip address and port for my server]
however the screen then gives the error about the nullPointerException.
so this seems like a permissions issue. Anyone with any ideas? I am really good with PC's I am terrible with Mac's (which is where the problem is) so I may need a very dumbed down explanation of where to go to fix.
