Hi Everyone! I'm creating this post because everytime I open the minecraft Launcher it says Downloading..... Why does it has to download the launcher everytime i open it? I have an old version in %appdata% folder I donw know if that means something..
And also when I have some conections problems Launcher doesn't start...
Iskess: Thank you a ton! Been reading through the forums trying to figure this out and this worked for me. Husband is currently trying the same fix.
I will likely change back to the new launcher in a while to see if the issues have been fixed. I am sure people are doing the best they can to fix the bugs. There's a reason I'm not a Programmer. Too much of a pain for me to deal with.
If you wait to use this fix it might not be the change you made that fixes the problem. Read for more information:
This one has been driving me crazy, because sometimes the download for the launcher works and sometimes it just hangs. One time it wouldn't download so I took it offline and the launcher opened so I could play offline. The next time it downloaded and I thought everything was great, but then the time immediately after that it started downloading again with yet another hang point in the download. So guess what I did, I took it offline and to my horror the game crashed.
At this point I couldn't even play because it would not download and the game would crash offline. That's how I got here on Friday 2/3/17 and grabbed the old launcher in case I needed it (spoiler, I didn't use it).
However, when I went to work on it Sunday 2/5/2017 it downloaded just fine and the game came up. Now I am paranoid this is going to happen again. I left the game up, because I am using it for a study. This is costing me quite a bit when it fails, but there's nothing worse than an unreliable error. I do not even know where to start to fix this. For all I know it is all on Microsoft's end.
The reason for it always downloading is for DRM purposes. If the launcher can't phone home to check certain things(probably the version), it crashes on the updating screen. No idea why this change would be put in, but luckily it only checks once a day.

It works perfectly offline, there is no kind of DRM(if you get a log or something freezes, please report it on bugs.mojang.com as its NOT intended).
The launcher is new and still being tested(thats why its a limited rollout), be sure to report any error you find so it can be better when itsrolled out to everybody!

I wouldn't say it works perfectly. I ran Minecraft fine on this machine for over a year. I didn't have a single problem and I did not want any changes since I am using this as an experimental testbed. I am not a fan of this forced updating. This was not how things worked before Microsoft's ownership of Minecraft.
Minecraft is supposed to be a friendly, open, community based platform with power to the users. I hope this is not a sign that they plan to lock everything down that made Minecraft successful. They will lose their base users and substitute it with a different kind of user. The kind of user who does not wish to contribute, but is only a consumer of an end product and unless they can keep adding every user's wish this platform will die. Anyway, testing should be an opt-in or at the very least an opt-out. How do I opt-out? I just want a static version to use for testing.
Just out of curiosity, what makes you think that the download part is for DRM? Is it updating some sort of check? This might help me figure out how to work around Microsoft's fail if they are not going to give me any other options.

Works perfectly offline? How come when I went to launch my game this morning(without WiFi), it went straight to the updating screen for a few seconds and crashed? How can it even detect there is an update available without a WiFi connection?

I believe that it is for some sort of check because the updater appeared while I was offline(no WiFi). And it never let me actually run the launcher until I connected to WiFi and let it do its "update". There is also no way to Opt-out of this unless you use a modified launcher.
EDIT: OK, the launcher actually never brought up the updating screen when I ran the launcher with a WiFi connection, it loaded like normal. Disabled my WiFi and attempted to load the launcher up, resulted in the launcher bringing me to the "Updating" screen and crashing a few seconds later.

I have the exact same problem. I have been looking for hours and still have found nothing helpful. I hope someone knows how to fix this.
Dude. I think I found a fix. The new launcher is experiencing some bugs right now, so until they are fixed, use the older one.

Glad I could help, keep on crafting!
