Ok so I am a new dad trying to help my son get started with some mods...I have done lots of research and I know a lot about computers so I am not dumb on this stuff...
I got the latest version installed and we can play in survival and creative modes.
I downloaded forge and it took a few times but finally installed on my computer (running windows 7).
Then went and downloaded a couple of mods and put them in the mods folder in .minecraft file
Opened mincraft and switched my profile to forge and started the game...it tried to open with forge and would not.
Then I realized that the mod I tried to open was 1.8 so I switched the setting to 1.8 and now it won't even try to open with forge just goes straight to the menu like forge is not loaded...
So what gives?? Am I missing something?
My son wants the Dragon Mounts mod which I see in the mods folder 1.8 version...
Ok...when you say the forge version of minecraft what exactly do you mean?
And when you say forge and mods are same version you mean under edit profile chose forge 1.8 for dragon mounts 1.8 correct? or do i need to download forge 1.8?

Curse PremiumIf you want 1.8 mods, you need to install 1.8 Forge, then select that Profile.
Modded MC Rule #1: MC version must match Forge version must match mod version.
"We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far."
Minecraft version... (opened at least once),
then
Forge version... (opened at least once; I have many fewer prefer problems when I use the recommended version, rather than the latest version),
finally
and Mod version must all match.
Be careful the entire version matches (1.8 MC version and Forge 1.8.2 wont work)

Allright I'm not an expert but do the folowing:
1. Open minecraft launcher, go under profiles and set "Use Version:" to 1.8
2. Launch minecraft with the dited profile, let it download everything
3. Quit Minecraft
4. Download https://files.minecraftforge.net/maven/net/minecraftforge/forge/index_1.8.html Make sure its 1.8 not 1.8.#
5. Install forge
6. Run minecraft launcher
7. Make sure the forge profile is selected
8. Start the game with the forge profile.
9. Quit the game
10. Insert the mods in the required folder
11. Repeat from 6. to 8.
12. Good luck!
