I recently upgraded my router to the ASUS rt-ac2300. Before I upgraded, everything was fine and I could lan world with my friend all the time. Now, I can see their lan worlds, but when I try to join them, it times out. When I go into cmd and ping their computer, it times out also. Java SE Binary has full access in the firewall settings, and I am a networking nub, so I have no idea what all the settings mean on the router login page.

I've also tried connecting directly by putting the IP address in the direct connect search bar and putting the port number at the end of the address. (192.168.1.2:*****)

Any info on how to fix this issue would be so helpful.

if you are saying its happening with the new router, then it definately has something to do with it. Check the configurations to see if something is blocking devices in the same LAN from communicating between eachother

What setting might that be? I've looked online and found that AP isolation might cause it, but it is disabled.

Not sure cause I dont have that router, you will have to look around in the configs and google anything that jumps out

... when you changed routers did you have to connect to a new network or was it a "drop in" replacement?

If it was a new network, did you configure it as a public or "home" network?

What type of network it is changes the way various firewall functions work.

Generally speaking LAN connections will only work on a "Home" network.

I'm pretty sure It's a home network and when I set up the router, I had to connect to a new network with a new name and setup

And you allowed access to java for both public and private in windows firewall in the new network?

Adding to my last post, I have also gone into the advanced settings and made the rule allow its use of lan. The normal firewall settings are blocked because they are managed by mcafee

OH Mcafee! Its known to cause issues!

You used that tool to remove mcafee? What antivirus he has?

I removed it on his PC too, we are both just using the windows one now.

Run the program, choose "I accept", then "Do a scan and save a log file". After a while a text file will open. Copy everything, put the log on http://paste.ubuntu.com and give us the link.

UPDATE: Before installing HijackThis, I tested to see if the LAN world was working, and it worked! No time out or anything. Thanks so much for the help, it really means alot.
