So I recently built a new gaming PC with great specs, and I eagerly installed Minecraft and all my favorite mods (a modpack I've used before on PCs with lower specs without any crashing problems) only to experience after about 2 minutes of undisturbed gameplay, a ton of framerate lag, followed by complete unresponsiveness from Minecraft.
I'm running Minecraft version 1.7.10
Here's a list of my computer specs:
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Now, you might just dismiss my lag issues as "too many mods," and maybe you're right, and I just don't understand how Minecraft works, but I've played with more mods than that on my old computer, which had good, but lower specs, and I didn't have this problem with crashing (it's probably worth noting that was back on 1.6). So I would expect that now, on a computer with those specs, I should be able to play all these mods, and have shaders turned on and still get 60fps consistently.
I have Minecraft installed on my HDD, though it still wrote a few files to the AppData folder on my SSD where Windows is installed. I also grabbed the latest launcher so that I could install Minecraft without installing Java on my computer, but instead letting Minecraft download the libraries it needs. I even figured out how to install Forge manually without Java, though I had to go track down a few libraries it needed that it couldn't find automatically. Funnily enough, that was something that I read on howtogeek.com that reportedly increased the performance of the game.
I've looked at a dozen different threads about people complaining about Minecraft lagging on their computers with good specs, and tried their suggestions. These solutions include:
Making sure that javaw.exe is using my NVIDIA GPU and not my on-board graphics driver with NVIDIA Control Panel
Disabling snooper
Allocating more memory to Minecraft (8GB, and then 16GB)
Allocating less memory to Minecraft (down to 4GB)
Lowering my render distance, and lowering other graphics settings in-game
Changing the Priority of javaw.exe in Task Manager to High
But to no avail. I'm about out of ideas, short of cutting back on mods, but I feel like my computer should be able to run this many mods just fine. Am I wrong? Any suggestions (or criticisms) are welcome.
So to anyone else having this problem and finding this thread in the future, I seem to have solved my own problem.
I did inevitably have to cut down on mods, but I only had to get rid of the Aether II and the Twilight Forest mod to get rid of the majority of the lag. I guess I underestimated the extra load created by adding more dimensions to the world.
Additionally, in my video options I changed Advanced OpenGL from OFF to FANCY (you could change it to FAST I imagine to speed up performance even more), and the big one -- I changed Chunk Loading from DEFAULT to MULTI-CORE. Changing just those two settings phenomenally boosted my performance. I'm now running SEUS v11.0 and getting a consistent 40 FPS. That's much more what I expected out of my computer.
I guess I just completely overlooked those two (Idk how...) when I was tweaking my settings. At any rate, there's another few things to add to your list of potential solutions to try to improve Minecraft performance and get rid of lag. Hope it helps.
