it may be becasue i have a big world or becasue of how often i use large mod packs but i often have trouble getting minecraft to launch with anything less than 4gb but i could be wrong

seen this a couple of times, try alocating more ram to minecraft and turning off a texturepack if you have one

Again, allocating more RAM is worse, explained to you in a previous post. Correct fix is what websrosc said
Thats (once you launched the game) Options, Video Settings, (Scroll down) VBO and set it to Off. If that doesnt work, post a dxdiag log http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/pixel-format-not-accelerated/support/#dxdiag
