Me and my son are trying to play Minecraft over the same internet at home. But we cant seem to connect to each other so we can play. Can we do it using magic launcher? Or does one need an account and the other person uses magic launcher, Im not sure.. sometimes we get an error saying timed out or it just wont find the server.
We have opened up the game to LAN but still one of the clients doesnt find the other.
Playing over LAN requires 3 devices to work together. A problem with the configuration of any of them will prevent it from working.
1) The "host" PC must allow remote guest machines to connect to the local Java server. It is not strictly necessary that the it also allows the server to multicast out the game announcement (without this the guest PC won't see the LAN game in its UI and your only hope is to use direct connect).
2) Your network router must allow the two machines to talk to each other. WiFi routers can operate in a mode that only allows wireless clients to talk to and from the WAN / Internet. That configuration won't work.
3) The "guest" PC must allow the local Java client to make connections. It is not strictly necessary that it also allows it to receive the multicasted game announcement (without this the guest PC won't see the LAN game in its UI and your only hope is to use direct connect).
By trying to host with each machine you can try to determine which machine has the problem. Generally speaking LAN won't work if either machine has the network configuration as something other than a "Home" / "Private" network. The firewall is more restrictive on other kinds of networks.
