So a while ago my gf bought her brother a budget gaming laptop, specs are
i5 5200u @ 2.46 GHZ
8GB RAM
Nvidia 940M GPU
930GB HDD
I'm a computers guy, and I authorized this laptop, and he runs Overwatch (on the lowest settings) just fine, no terrible frame dropping or anything. Minecraft, which we just installed on it today (and reinstalled) MAXES the CPU in the menu. I cant even use the menu without there being significant interface delay. I cant fathom why this would be, and in the game, with everything as low as it will go, frames capped at 30, it still functions badly. Any help would be much appreciated.
Check to see (use F3 in game and look at the top right collumn of text) if your computer is utilizing your GPU to run the game. Often when I run a different version of minecraft for the first time (I have similar specs for my laptop), the java instance is auto booted by the CPU's integrated graphics component which is why you will see it running at 100% and way below what you would expect your laptop to run it at.
If, and it is likely, that your GPU is not running minecraft, go into your NVidia's control panel and into the program settings and 'add program' click the top option after just running the game (it should be a java instance) and select it. Change this program's settings to be run by the GPU and not the integrated graphics.
