First off: Is it now a thing for animals to have stupidly short attention spans? More than once I've tried to lure an animal--sheep, cow, chicken, etc--to my pen and every so often I'll turn around to find that they've stopped following me. Before you say I'm moving out of their range, not only have there been cases where some animals stopped following me but not all of them, but when I backtrack they ignore me even when I stick the food right in their face.
Secondly: My house is sealed on all four sides and has a wooden door(I'm on normal so Zombies can't bust that down), and yet all of a sudden, two nights in a row, my guy can't sleep because there are monsters nearby, despite being able to sleep in bed just fine for a couple of days prior after getting the bed. What gives?

There could still be monsters in the area near your house.

With the first issue. This happens to everyone, you could try to find a mod that fixes it.
Secondly, it doesn't matter how secure your house is. It only depends on whether a hostile mob is within a certain range.
OK, what is that range? I can certainly make my house bigger if I need to.
You can not sleep within 10 blocks of a hostile mob.
