So here's my problem: About a year and a half or two years ago, I started a world in 1.7.2 and added a few mods. I haven't played it for about a year and the laptop it was on stopped working (a hard drive error of some sort). So I connected it externally and got the files off of it. This was on the ATLauncher so I copied the whole instance over. Only when I tried to load it, it would just crash, leaving no crash report behind to read. So I went into the jarmods folder, and there were two versions of forge and two versions of Optifine. So I removed the older versions and tried again, still no luck. So I then checked the mods folder. (At that time, I usually had an Optifine jar in both folders). But there wasn't one, So I'm at a loss as to what I can try or what I should do.
When you say the whole instance, you mean the whole thing? You shouldn't need to do that. Just copy the <world name> folder from the saves file. You'll need to create a new profile using the exact same MC version and mods (including Forge). Then copy the original <world name> folder to the new saves folder.

That's kind of what copying the entire instance is... It'd have the proper version of forge and the correct mods already there.
But I can try that I guess.
