I just built a new computer with my son, hoping it would run Minecraft better than the laptop he was playing on before. Unfortunately, Minecraft seems to freeze while playing.
It had been crashing when loading a world in the manner described in this thread, but after installing the latest driver from Intel it now freezes, usually when placing a gravel block. I suspect sand would behave the same. This has been the only time it's been consistently freezing.
I've tried a number of different settings to try to alleviate this behavior: fast vs. fancy graphics, VBO on/off, VSync on/off, particles minimal, switching from the simple Microsoft download with packaged Java to the Oracle Java download, etc. No change in behavior.
The computer has an Intel i5-6400 with integrated graphics 530. We didn't put in a dedicated graphics card, intending to let him upgrade that in the future. Is that a mistake?

Any suggestions for me? My first thought is "get a graphics card," but I'd like to rule out the no-cost solutions first if they're out there.
An update: I've pulled the GeForce 9800 GTX from my computer and popped it in (with driver 342.00), and the behavior is no better (I dare say it's worse). I know it's a 7-year-old card, but it's clear that it's not as simple as "don't use integrated graphics!". It didn't do this using the GeForce with my Phenom x4 (again, 7-year-old setup).
I'm not sure even where to start looking from here. The only indication I have is the launcher log states "...exited with a bad state -805303639...", but not until after I close the window with the red "X". I have no crash log. Is there any other live-updated log I can look in that might give insight into this issue?
...AND A LITTLE LATER...
Well, a little progress. I've set the memory setting in the profile editor to XxX512M instead of 1G or 2G, and I was able to run around for a while without freezing. But no sound. Maybe it's a sound driver issue instead, which would be surprising - everything is ALWAYS a video driver issue, in my experience. I'll have to continue looking tomorrow or later this week.
Try installing 64 bit Java if your OS is 64 bit. Next, make sure MC is using the graphics card, not the chip. Might have to dig around the nVidia settings.

"We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far."
Thanks for the suggestions,@majestyc2k1, but I'm pretty convinced it's the sound card doing something - deliberately disable sound card, game runs fine. Re-enable, restart, drop gravel, freeze.
So...the sound card in question is the built-in sound controller in an MSI H110M Pro-VD LGA 1151: a Realtek ALC887. Current sound drivers are version 6.0.1.7954, dated 10/11/2016. Anyone have any thoughts on how to approach this?
Don't know yet, but I'll try all those this weekend, as well as other things (my son said it crashed once after jumping from very high, but I wasn't there so I don't know if it's the same bug or not). I'll report back.
Great news! I found out the problem! Well, actually, I didn't. Not exactly. I had copied my son's .minecraft folder over from his old machine in its entirety when I copied his files over. I moved the .minecraft folder to a backup directory and started over completely fresh; now there doesn't seem to be any hangups. Evidently, even if you re-download the gamefiles (I created new profiles several times), there may be some persistent file that stay on that may affect your new system.
Lessons learned: if you're copying files, just move the saves. Let everything else get installed fresh.

Curse PremiumThere are Win 10 drivers for that chip. If your still having trouble, try an earlier version of MC. It could be that MC 1.10 is to much for that chip.

Curse PremiumDoes the gravel sound complete playing before the freeze or after the freeze?
Does the same freeze happen when placing anvils, sand, red sand, or TNT (when it's lit)? Or is it particular to gravel?
You can play any sound in the game by using the /playsound command. Here is a link to a thread with a lot of info about the command.
Example:

Glad it was resolved
