So I recently decided to get back into modded Minecraft and upon doing so discovered that the client increases its RAM usage the longer I play until a inevitable halt of the client occurs. I can play for about 20 minutes until the RAM usage exceeds the 4GB allocated.
Computer Specs:
Acer Aspire V 17 Nitro:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60 GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 950M
4GB Dedicated VRAM
2TB HDD
Windows 10
Mods I'm Using:
I've heard the problem has something to do with a memory leak, but I'm not entirely sure. Any help is appreciated.
I have recently attempted to run the Hermit Pack with FTB and ran into the same problem, I am going to guess it has something to do with either Forge itself or my Java, so I am going to update Java to the latest version to see if the problem can fix itself.
This is not a problem. That's how Java works. If you give a Java app 4GB for internal use (Xmx argument), the whole java.exe (or javaw.exe) process will need up to 4.5GB total. 500MB for the Java emulator to run itself + the 4GB given to Minecraft.
If this inflates to much more then 4.5GB, then it will be genuine memory leak.
the ram usage goes well over 4.5GB and manages to reach 6GB before flat out crashing, so I am confused as to what is causing it and how exactly to fix it.
What version of Java are you using? Try using the very latest, 102. Does this issue happen with any other software, Minecraft or otherwise? Java software? Can you run 1.7.10 modpacks without this issue? Do you run into this issue while running the Hermitpack without any changes, no minor mods such as Optifine, no JVM argument changes, just 4GB?

I installed the latest version of Java yesterday with no changes to the problem. This problem only occurs with 1.10.2 versions only when using Forge. This problem doesn't occur in any version prior to 1.10. I haven't altered anything in the HermitPack, but still get the same issue. The JVM argument was left the same.
It stops on the last step of loading the mods and says ran out of memory. Try running Forge with No mods installed, just to see if it truly is forge messing up or if the mods cause the crash.

I attempted using Forge alone and ended up running into the exact same problem, albeit the memory usage was increasing slower.
What version of Forge did you try with? Try using the recommended Forge version, which is currently 12.18.2.2099. It does kinda sound like a memory leak though.

The recommended forge version is incompatible with several of the mods I'm using and from past tests, every version of Forge for 1.10.X causes a memory leak.
Sounds like a memory leak alright. In which case you'll have to wait until Forge fixes it. The only question is why hasn't everyone had this problem then?

Curse PremiumDo you have 64 bit Java installed?

Curse PremiumIt's most likely that Forge has a memory leak if the RAM usage exceeds 4 GB. Have you tried updating your forge version to the latest?
If the problem persists, try the recommended version instead of the latest.

Yes, I have 64 bit Java, albeit a little outdated.
I have the latest Forge version, but using the recommended doesn't work with a few of my mods.
I think this is what you're after
-Xmx4G -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:-UseAdaptiveSizePolicy -Xmn128M
I'm referring to how much allocated for the entire Java process

Curse PremiumThere are reports about 1.10.2 using insane amounts of ram for modded I myself cant run the Ftb pack using the java arguments:
-Xmx3840m -Xms256m -XX:PermSize=256m -Dminecraft.applet.TargetDirectory="W:\User Files\Documents\Curse\Minecraft\Instances\FTB Presents HermitPack" -Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true -Dfml.ignoreInvalidMinecraftCertificates=true
