I'm playing Minecraft on a laptop that is about 1-2 years old. I never had any problems with anything older than 1.8 (50-80FPS) , but when 1.9 came out, lag city!(5FPS) I was hoping it was just a problem with 1.9, but it has not improved with any of the subsequent updates. I am very sad, since there have been so many fun additions and I can't enjoy any of them!
The things I've tried so far:
The basics; Fast graphics, fewer chunks, smooth lighting off, created a new world just in case I had something in the world causing all the lag.
Making sure Java is up to date. (version 8)
uninstalling and reinstalling Minecraft
Setting Java to "high priority" using my task manager
I'm not very computer savvy, so this is as much as I've been able to figure out on my own. Please use small words when helping me Thanks in advance!
My computer specs are as follows:
Processor Intel(R) Core (TM) i5-4210U CPU @1.7GHz 2.40 GHz
I haven't noticed problems with other games. What would you suggest I
ask about on Bleepingcomputer? Was something changed in 1.9 that makes
this problem worse? I'm still able to play 1.8 or lower with no
problems to speak of.
- Takes about 10 seconds if you know how to edit a profile inside the launcher
- Takes 30 seconds if you don't because this guide will show you step by step
Warning: Never just throw aggressive amounts of CPU at Minecraft. 2G is fine and you should never do 3+ unless you have 10+ to spare. If you have 8, then never go above 2. You'll break stuff...
Thanks for the tips! Allocated 2G of RAM, and Installed Optifine. I still seem to be about 1-3 FPS! Oddly, when I pause my game, it jumps to 80. Not sure if that is telling of anything. Any more suggestions?
View distance? 80 FPS only when you pause, or 80 when you aren't loading chunks(moving around)?
I would like to guess your "View Distance" is 8+. If so, see what lowering to 4 does.
Also, Optifine has a great deal of options to further reduce load. Go into your menu and lower some settings in performance and quality and set it all to "Faster" settings. Basically, every option added by optifine will say what setting will help with performance and which is optimal for PC's with performance to spare.
Additionally, you said you allocated 2Gb of RAM to MC, but did you do that in your new "optifine" profile in the launcher, or in the other profile you're no longer using because you swapped to the new profile created by optifine? I assumed you figured that out, but just throwing it out there just in case it was overlooked.
Edit: Also, is this a personal world or a server? If you are on a single player map, your PC is handling 100% of the game load. If you play on a server, the server handles it all and your PC just has to support client side load. Food for thought.
Maybe try running a different version of Minecraft (1.8?). It's hard to determine whether something on your computer is causing lag, or the new updates.
Anything lower than 1.9 works smoothly, I'm just bummed because I'm missing out of many cool things! Hoping I can figure out what has changed between the updates.
Thanks for more helpful ideas. I did double check, I has set my optifine profile to 2GB, also set view distance to 4, graphics to fast, smooth lighting to off, ect. I'm still at 1-3 FPS when trying to move around (80 only when I have paused the game)...It's looking like I"m running out of things to check. I will look into trying a server, but I mostly play MC offline, so I don't know if that is a long term solution.

Partially a Java issue.
I unfortunately probably can't help directly, but this probably belongs more in bleepingcomputer more than here because it's such a technical problem.
But...... does this happen with other java games? That would clarify a lot.
if yes.... then definitely go to a forum like bleepingcomputer.

2 huge steps that I don't see mentioned are allowing MC to use more RAM and using Optifine.
Optifine will double your FPS and using 2Gb instead of the default 1 can be a world of difference.
Optifine:
https://optifine.net/downloads
- Download latest for your version
- Double click the download jar when finished downloading
- Select the install when prompted
- Start Minecraft and make sure "Optifine" profile is selected
How to allocate more RAM in your MC launcher:
http://www.wikihow.com/Allocate-More-RAM-to-Minecraft
- Takes about 10 seconds if you know how to edit a profile inside the launcher
- Takes 30 seconds if you don't because this guide will show you step by step

Moderatori'll just point out that more ram does not make more FPS

Curse PremiumMaybe try reinstalling minecraft? It probably won't work, but it only takes 3 minutes...

Are you on a server or single player? Single player 1.9+ is immensely heavier than 1.7-1.8. If you're playing a single player map, try a server.
I am in single player, good idea, I'll look into it... (have reinstalled MC already
)
